Local Banker Named To State Association Board

HARLINGEN — As the move-in to the new Texas Regional Bank headquarters continues, its chief executive is adding new responsibilities after being named to the board of the Independent Texas Bankers Association.
Michael Scaief, chairman of Texas Regional Bank, was elected to the board of the largest state community banking organization in the nation with membership comprised of more than 2,000 banks and branches in 700 Texas communities.
“The Valley has always had a strong community banking presence and IBAT dedicates 100 percent of its resources to improving financial resources to the communities we serve,” Scaief said. “It’s an honor to be asked to serve on the IBAT board and work on banking and customer initiatives that provide better access to financial services.”
Scaief, a Valley native, began his banking career in 1987 at First Valley Bank. For a decade he worked his way up to senior vice president, managing lending and operations. Soon after the bank sold to Norwest/Wells Fargo in 1998.
In 2008, he organized a group of Valley businessmen to explore establishing a new regional bank. In 2010, the group purchased a South Texas bank, changed the name to Texas Regional Bank, and began operations.
In addition to his current role as chairman of Texas Regional Bank, he also serves as chairman and president of Texas State Bankshares, Inc., the bank’s holding company.
Scaief has held a number of leadership roles in the community, including positions board positions with the San Benito Industrial Foundation, Salvation Army, Valley Baptist Medical Center and the Texas Wildlife Association.
He is past chairman of the Harlingen Industrial Foundation, City of San Benito Board of Adjustments and Appeals and San Benito Chamber of Commerce.
He served as president of the San Benito Rotary Club and vice chairman of the Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority where he currently sits on the board. He has also been an elder and session member of the First Presbyterian Church of San Benito.
